May 21, 2026

Before replacing your Chevy SBC or BBC high torque mini starter, take note of all wiring connections on the starter and solenoid. This ensures you know exactly where every wire goes after installation.

Step1: Disconnect the Battery

Step1: Disconnect the battery.

Turn off the ignition and remove the negative battery cable from the battery(You will not need to remove the positive cable on the battery)

Step2: Jack up the vehicle if need be.

Step2: Jack up the vehicle if need be.

Ensure you jack the vehicle up on firm, level ground.

Step3: Locate the starter.

Step3: Locate the starter.

The starter is usually a cylinder mounted on the engine block. The smaller cylinder attached is the starter solenoid. A wire runs from the positive battery terminal or fuse box to the solenoid’s top terminal.

Step4: Disconnect the wiring to the solenoid.

Step4: Disconnect the wiring to the solenoid.

Unclip or unscrew all wires connected to the solenoid. On some models, bolts secure the wires.

Step4: Disconnect the wiring to the solenoid.

Step5: Remove the starter retaining bolts then the starter.

Don't force any bolts that are very tight and are difficult to remove.Rather, use a lubricant or grease to help you loosen the bolt.Be sure to use the correct size socket, otherwise you risk damaging the bolts.

Step 6: Compare the old and new starter.

Step 6: Compare the old and new starter.

Ensure the new 168 Tooth high torque mini starter matches the old one. If it looks different, it may not be compatible. New solenoids may have four terminals; you can use only the ones needed.

Step7: Install the new starter.

Step7: Install the new starter.

Slide the new starter into place. Insert and tighten the retainer bolts securely to prevent vibration while the engine runs.

Step8: Connect the wiring to the starter solenoid.

Step8: Connect the wiring to the starter solenoid.

Connect the old wiring to the corresponding terminals on the new solenoid. If the new solenoid has four terminals but the old one had two, only use the top and bottom terminals.

Step9: Reconnect the battery.

Step9: Reconnect the battery.

With the starter installed and wired, reconnect the black cable to the negative terminal on the battery and tighten it in place. Insert the key into the ignition and attempt to start the vehicle. If Chevy fails to start with the new starter in place, ensure the battery is fully charged.

Step10: Listen to the vehicle as you attempt to start it.

Step10: Listen to the vehicle as you attempt to start it.

As you turn the key in the ignition, listen for the sounds the engine makes to help determine if you have an issue with your starter. If the engine makes no sound whatsoever, or you hear only a faint clicking, it may be because there isn’t enough power reaching the electric starter motor.

Step11: Ensure the battery terminals are clean and secure.

Step11: Ensure the battery terminals are clean and secure.

Ensure battery terminals are clean and tightly connected. Wear gloves to avoid battery acid.

Step12: Check to see the starter solenoid is bad.

Step12: Check to see the starter solenoid is bad.

If the test light does not light up, it means power is not reaching the starter motor due to a faulty solenoid or a dead battery.

If the test light does light up, it means the solenoid is good, but the starter itself may have failed.

Step13: Charge your vehicle’s battery.

Step13: Charge your vehicle’s battery.

If you suspect the battery may simply be low on power, try charging it using either a trickle charger or another vehicle to jump start it.

Test the new starter.

Step14: Test the new starter.

Once installed correctly, start the vehicle. Your Chevy SBC or BBC engine should fire up smoothly with the high torque mini starter.
